Speaking at an event organized by the Madras Bar Association to felicitate Justice SV Gangapurwala, Chief Justice of Madras High Court, and Justice TS Sivagnanam, Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, the Supreme Court judge Justice MM Sundresh said that Justice Sivagnanam had received much appreciation from the Calcutta bar for his work.

Justice Sundresh recounted an incident where he was speaking to the lawyers in the Supreme Court about Justice Sivagnanam.

"Everyday in the morning during court hours, we used to meet in the lounge. I asked few of my colleagues who were in the Supreme Court coming from Calcutta how Justice Sivagnanam is sitting and one of them said two things. The first statement is that in the recent past, among all the Chief Justices who have adorned the High Court of Calcutta, he is the best. I was so happy. The second statement was that I wish he would continue here for a longer time. I told him I did not agree with this. If he is so good, I think you should say that he should be entitled to come to the Supreme Court at the earliest," he said.

Welcoming Justice Gangapurwala to Madras High Court, Justice Sundaresh said that the State is known for its hospitality and will embrace Justice Gangapurwala without any inhibition.

"This place is known for its hospitality. Whoever comes, we embrace them without any inhibition. There’s a beautiful saying by Andal which means for a good person, wherever he goes, that becomes his place. You’re an excellent sports person. Many of you may not know but a national level tennis player and I have had the pleasure of witnessing the game also."

Justice Gangapurwala said that any procedural changes in the court will be made only after consultation with the bar members and that they are always welcome to raise their grievances.

Justice Sivagnanam said transfer is a condition of service and obeying the orders of the Collegium is showing respect to the institution.

"As it is said, a transfer is a condition of service, an incidence of service. The collegium which thought fit that I'm a suitable candidate to be a judge of the High court recommended my name and I became a judge in 2019. The same collegium, thought fit that I should leave this place and go to Calcutta. I obeyed the orders. By that I mean giving respect to the institution, respect to the system. If we do not respect the system, the system will definitely not support us, it’ll fail us," he said.
