The Supreme Court Collegium consisting of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice SK Kaul and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, on Tuesday recommended the names of two advocates for appointment as Judges of the Madras High Court. The two advocates are:
1. N Senthilkumar, and
2. G Arul Murugan
The recommendation comes after the Madras High Court Collegium recommended their names in its resolution dated August 3, 2022 and the same was concurred by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the Governor.
The Collegium also stated that the elevation of the Advocates, who belong to the SC community and the OBC community respectively, as judges would bring better representation at the bar.
The collegium had initially considered the recommendation on January 17 and had sought specific materials from to the government after taking note of the observations of the Department of Justice. The file was received back with the Government stating that it did not have any additional inputs.
Thereafter, the Collegium again considered the recommendation on May 9 but deferred its decision to seek the opinion of two members of High Court Collegium as an earlier recommendation for the transfer of then acting Chief Justice was already pending.
After Justice SV Gangapurwala took charge as the Chief Justice of Madras High Court, the collegium requested him to send views on the advocates which was duly received.
"In view of the above, the Collegium resolves to recommend that (i) Shri N Senthilkumar and (ii) Shri G Arul Murugan, Advocates, be appointed as Judges of the Madras High Court. Their inter se seniority be fixed in terms of the existing practice," the Collegium said.
