Actress Ranjini Moves Kerala HC Challenging Publication Of Justice Hema Commission Report, Says She Gave Statements Under Promise Of Confidentiality

Malayalam film actress Ranjini has approached the Kerala High Court challenging a decision of a single bench of the Court allowing the publication of Justice Hema Committee Report on the conditions faced by women in the Malayalam film industry.
The actress claimed that she had given statements to the Committee under the promise of confidentiality. The appeal was placed before the bench of Acting Chief Justice A. M. Mustaque and Justice S. Manu
Earlier Sajimon Parayil, a film producer who has worked in Malayalam movies filed a petition before the Court challenging the decision of the State Information Commission directing the State Public Information Commissioner to publish the report after redacting any personally identifiable information. The Single Bench of the High Court dismissed the petition holding that larger public interest lay in the publication of the report.
The appellant who was not a party in the writ petition stated that she is not against the publication of the report, but that she should have been given notice about the publishable part of the report.
She claimed that she had the legitimate expectation of being allowed to be heard during the redaction process. She submitted that presently, the State Information Officer had the sole discretion to choose which parts of the report could be published.
She further argued that the publication of the report as it is, violates her right to privacy and legitimate expectation of being heard.
The matter will be next heard on the 19th of August.
