The Kerala High Court on Tuesday disposed of the suo moto case initiated in the matter relating to the alleged trespass by some persons into the sacred 'Kalthara' of Ponnambalamedu, a protected forest area near the Sabarimala Temple.
Certain persons had allegedly trespassed and performed pooja in the protected area. The issue came to light after a video of the same surfaced online. The Court in this light initiated a suo motu case and took action on the report of Sabarimala special commissioner.
The Division Bench comprising Justice Anil K. Narendran and Justice P.G. Ajithkumar took note that entry has now been restricted in the area, and surveillance measures were also in place, following the directions issued by it on May 26, 2023.
The Court thus directed the Deputy Director of the Periyar West Division to take necessary steps to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in Ponnambalamedu and that there is also a real time monitoring system in the area. It further directed the Forest officials to prevent unauthorized entry in Ponnambalamedu.
During the hearing, the Court was also informed by the Senior Government Pleader that the 1st accused person who conducted the pooja in Ponnambalamedu was yet to be arrested, and added that the investigation was currently under the supervision of the District Police Chief, Pathanamthitta.
The Bench orally observed that since measures were being taken, the matter need not be kept pending.
The suo moto case was thus disposed of.
