    On Thursday, the Jharkhand High Court directed the state government to clarify whether it has established standard operating procedures (SOP) to assist foreign tourists visiting the state.

    During a PIL hearing prompted by alleged gang rape of a Spanish tourist in Dumka, the court led by Acting Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Navneet Kumar, sought clarification from the government.

    The court sought a comprehensive affidavit from the Dumka police, outlining the progress of the investigation into the aforementioned case.

    Inquiring further, the bench questioned the government counsel regarding existing protocols for aiding and supporting foreign tourists within the state boundaries. Additionally, the court sought clarification on the procedural formalities required for inspecting tourists upon their arrival.

    The court also pressed the government to delineate the measures undertaken to mitigate the rising incidents of crimes against women. The next hearing on this matter is scheduled for March 13.

    Notably, the court had earlier taken suo motu cognizance of the case and directed the state government to provide a report.

    As per the government's submission, eight suspects have been apprehended in connection with the incident, and a compensation of Rs 10 lakh has been granted to the victim.
