Justice Sanjeev Kumar Appointed As Acting Chief Justice Of J&K And Ladakh High Court

The notification issued in this regard reads thus,

“In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjeev Kumar, Judge of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, to perform the duties of office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from 10.04.2025 consequent upon the retirement of Shri Justice Tashi Rabastan, Chief Justice, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court on 09.04.2025”

Justice Sanjeev Kumar was born on 8th of April, 1966 in village Prehta Nagrota of Tehsil Basohli Distt. Kathua. Had his Graduation (B.Sc) from Govt. Degree College Kathua in 1985 in first Division and LLB from University of Jammu in 1988 in first Division. Enrolled Advocate by J&K Bar Council in Feb. 1989.

He was appointed Govt. Advocate for Srinagar Wing of the High Court of J&K twice, first from 1992 to 1993 , Second from 1994 to 1995. Again appointed Govt. Advocate for Jammu Wing in the year 1995 and remained, as such, till 1998. He represented almost all Govt. Deptts. and PSUs. Was Counsel on Panel of Advocate General for more than two years and representative Forest Deptt. & Finance Deptt. including Commercial Taxes and Excise Deptt. of State in the Jammu Wing of Hon'ble High Court.

He was also standing counsel for J&K SSB for almost six years between 2006-2012. Practised mainly in the High Court and had more than two hundred reported judgments to his credit. Appeared in many notable cases like Toshakana Case, Assembly Dissolution Matter and recently in 'Reservation in promotion Matter' & many more. Justice Kumar was administered oath on 06.06.2017 as Permanent Judge of J&K High Court.
