The Himachal Pradesh High Court has initiated the practice of translating its judgments in the Hindi language. The High Court formally introduced this change through an announcement posted on its official website on August 16. This move aligns with the efforts to enhance accessibility to legal information for a wider audience.
These translations will be accessible on the High Court's official website- with effect from January 1, 2023 for both the full bench and division benches and of single-judge judgments starting from August 11.
This initiative is in line with a similar practice that had been adopted by the Supreme Court earlier in the year. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had shared that english in 'Legal Avatar' Not Comprehensible To 99.9% Citizens and hence the Supreme Court's translation process of judgments into regional languages had commenced. As of now, approximately 2,900 judgments from the Supreme Court have been translated into various vernacular languages.
It's noteworthy that several other High Courts across India, including Kerala, Delhi, Bombay, and Allahabad, have already taken similar steps to make their judgments available in the local languages of their respective states, promoting legal accessibility and inclusivity.
