The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday directed the amicus curiae appointed in the Morbi Bridge case, along with an independent lawyer, to engage directly with the victims of the tragedy.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi said, "The amicus, along with another lawyer, will visit them, understand their situation, and prepare a detailed report."

On October 30, 2022, the pedestrian suspension bridge over the Machchhu River in Morbi, Gujarat, collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least 141 people and injuries to more than 180 others. The bridge, constructed during British rule, had been closed since March for renovation and was re-opened just four days before its collapse.

High Court was hearing the suo motu PIL initiated in the case.

During the hearing, Advocate General Kamal Trivedi highlighted the recent initiatives by the Oreva Group's Trust, responsible for the bridge's maintenance, including appointment of members to make quarterly visits to victims and address their ongoing needs. Trivedi further informed the Court that a district child protection officer will oversee the welfare of seven orphaned children and another 14 who lost one parent.

However, the Court noted the "unusual case" of a victim who declined compensation. It proposed that the legal team provide guidance to help the victim reconsider their choice. It said,

"We suggest appointing a representative for the court to engage in dialogue with the victims. ..We seek an independent viewpoint. The goal is to ensure all victims feel that the judiciary is a pillar of support and that their voices are heard.”

The Court thus directed the amicus and the accompanying lawyer to visit the victims in August. It directed the District Collector to coordinate the logistical arrangements for the same.
