A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court challenging the election of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader and Deputy Chief Minister Parvesh Verma from the New Delhi constituency in the recently conducted Assembly polls.
Justice Jasmeet Singh issued notice on the election petition filed by one Vishvanath Agarwal and listed the matter for hearing on May 27.
The Court sought response of the Election Commission of India (ECI), Returning Officer, Verma and 23 candidates who contested the election, including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal.
Verma had secured a total of 30,088 votes and defeated Arvind Kejriwal from the constituency in question with a margin of 4089 votes.
Apart from challenging Verma's election as null and void, the plea seeks a direction on ECI to conduct fresh election qua the constituency.
The petitioner told Court that despite being present with all requisite documents, he was not allowed to file his nomination before 3 PM. It was his case that he was not allowed to participate in the election process.
“Issue notice… Let replies be filed,” the Court said.
The Delhi Assembly elections were held on February 05. Results to the same were declared on February 08.
