The initiative to live stream the court proceedings was inaugurated on August 15 by Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha after he declared open the newly constructed extension building of the High Court with 07 Additional Court Rooms, which makes a total of 22 Courtrooms in the Chhattisgarh High Court.
On this occasion, the Chief Justice also inaugurated e-service center in 22 Districts, a mobile app in relation to e-gate pass and online recruitment applications and software with respect to the Virtual Courts regarding traffic chalans for the Districts viz. Ambikapur, Bilaspur, Durg and Jagdalpur and Tribunals.
Additionally, new Telegram channels for Cause List, Tender Process, AFR Judgments and important notices were also launched. The cause list, AFR Judgments, important information and tenders have also been available on the High Court website.
Notably, the Gujarat High Court was the first High Court in the Country to live-stream its proceedings in 2020. It was followed by several High Courts across the nation, i.e., Gauhati (Principal Bench), Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Patna (currently not functional), Telangana High Court, and Meghalaya High Court.
The initiatives to live stream Court hearings were taken pursuant to the decision of the Supreme Court in Swapnil Tripathi v. Supreme Court of India (2018). Therein, stressing on transparency of Court proceedings, the Apex Court had famously held, "Sunlight is the best disinfectant".
The Supreme Court has also started live-streaming the proceedings of the Constitution Benches.
