A public interest litigation filed before the Calcutta High Court has flagged the blue and white colour scheme used all over the city's road and bridge markings as unsafe, potentially being a 'nightmare for drivers'.
Counsel approached a division bench presided over by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and submitted that this blue and white colour scheme was against the mandate of the Indian Roads Congress and that the standard colours for the same were white, yellow and black; yellow being the colour for warning.
It was submitted that the counsel had not affixed coloured copies of the images to the other parties and that the same would have to be replaced.
"It's a very valid issue...including the centre barricade. What colour it should be? All school buses are mandatorily yellow," the Chief Justice noted.
"Each colour has its own wavelength. Especially in the night when coming from the airport to the city, the line should be in yellow and black, but it is in blue and white...an absolute nightmare for drivers, scientifically speaking," the counsel stated.
Accordingly, the plea was adjourned to a later date.
