The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the police authorities to submit their report on the progress into the probe on an incident of gang rape in Bengal's Sandeshkhali.

Justice Jay Sengputa directed the police to file their report by 13th January, on a plea claiming that no action had been taken even after the rape case was filed and that the accused were roaming free in the area.

Counsel for the petitioner submitted that the accused were even threatening the petitioner with dire consequences. It was stated that the petitioner was constrained to approach the police again over such allegations. But, even after this, no steps had been taken and the culprits have not been arrested.

Counsel for the state sought time to file a report, which was granted by the court.

The court also directed the police to maintain vigil in the area and to ensure that the victim was provided with armed security.
