A four-member committee of judges at the Calcutta High Court has proposed to reduce the court's puja vacations in 2025, by seven days, in order to address the huge backlog of cases existing at the High Court.
According to reports, the committee comprising of Justices Harish Tandon, Soumen Sen, Joymalya Bagchi and Tapabrata Chakraborty, after meeting with the various lawyers' bodies, proposed that the puja vacations including holidays for Durga puja, Kali puja and Lakshmi puja be cut short.
The meeting of the committee and proposed changes are in the backdrop of the central government's directive for High Courts to ensure 222 working days every calendar year. The High Court's proposed calendar only accounts for 212 working days for the year 2025.
Since lawyers' bodies were opposed to having alternate Saturday's as working days each month, the committee has proposed to shorten the puja vacations in order to meet the threshold mandated by the central government.
