The wife of slain gangster Khalid Azim alias Ashraf (slain gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed’s brother), Zainab Fatima has moved a criminal writ petition before the Allahabad High Court challenging the First Information Report (FIR) lodged against her connection with the February 2023 Umesh Pal murder case.
A bench of Justice Vivek Kumar Birla and Justice Vinod Diwakar is likely to take up the matter this week.
Zainab has been accused by the UP police of helping the shooters escape from Prayagraj after killing Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 Raju Pal murder case, and his two police guards.
Zainab, who is presently absconding, is facing the FIR, initially registered with the Dhoomanganj police station against Atique Ahmed, his brother Ashraf, Atique’s two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam and nine others.
It may be noted that Atique Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in a shocking incident in April this year in the presence of the police and the media, while they were being taken for a medical examination to a hospital in Prayagraj.
On September 30, the State of Uttar Pradesh submitted before the Supreme Court that no wrongdoing was found on the part of the UP police in the ongoing investigation into the killing of gangsters Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf.
The submission was made by the State Government while submitting a detailed status report in response to a Supreme Court directive issued on August 11, 2023, in the case of Vishal Tiwari v. Union of India.
Earlier, the Supreme Court ordered the submission of an Affidavit outlining the stage of investigation or trial in cases specified by the petitioner, and also to consider existing reports and recommendations regarding police encounters.
