Allahabad High Court Takes Cognizance Of Seized Vehicles Lying Negligently Outside Police Stations, Seeks State's Response

The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday took cognizance of a letter petition filed before it for direction to State authorities regarding proper storage and release of seized vehicles lying negligently outside police stations all over the State of Uttar Pradesh.

Advocate Shubham Agrawal filed a letter petition highlighting the menace of growing stock of such seized vehicles.

It was alleged that the vehicles were not being returned to the owners due to pendency of various civil and criminal cases in which the vehicles were involved. The vehicles were lying outside in the open and were being damaged due to weather changes. Further, such vehicles were causing encroachment on the public road adjoining the Police Stations and turning them into junk yards as there was no place prescribed for proper storage of such vehicles. The lack of rules with regard to storage of seized vehicles was highlighted before the Court. It was stated that the vehicles turn into scrap within a short amount of time which is loss not only to the owner, but also to the Government exchquer.

Specific photographs of seized vehicles lying in front of Cantonment Police Station at Prayagraj were brought before the Court. Agrawal submitted that menace of seized vehicles is required to be checked and action is to be taken to prevent the piling of such vehicles be it four wheelers or two wheelers from turning into junk and unroadworthy resulting in national wastage.

The bench comprising of Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker and Justice Ashutosh Srivastava issued notice and directed the State to file its response in the matter.

The case is directed to be listed on 28^th November.
