On Monday, the Allahabad High Court Bar Association, as well as the Oudh Bar Association (Lucknow Bench), called for abstinence from work on 25th February 2025 due to the low number of judges in the Allahabad High Court.
Both Bar Associations have expressed concerns regarding the decreasing number of judges and increasing number of cases in the High Court.
Earlier, the High Court Bar Association, Allahabad, had declared abstinence from work on 21st February 2025 against the amendments to the Advocates Act, 1961, as well as the deficiency of judges in the High Court. Subsequently, HCBA passed a resolution for a strike on the 24th as well as the 25th. However, the motion to abstain from work on the 24th was withdrawn.
In the letter addressed to the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, Honorary Secretary Advocate Vikrant Pandey highlighted that though the sanctioned strength of the number of judges for the Allahabad High Court is 160, only 79 posts were filled.
In addition to the grievance regarding the number of judges in the High Court, the Oudh Bar Association, Lucknow, raised concerns regarding the listing of cases and rotation of cases in the cause list. The letter of the Oudh Bar Association highlights that the cases being listed are rotated after 2 months.
