The second discussion by the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, part of a series titled the 'Vidhi Book Adda', will feature the book, 'Mountain Tales: Love and Loss in the Municipality of Castaway Belongings', authored by Saumya Roy, on 1st November at 6 pm.

The Adda will feature a keynote by the Chief Guest Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Judge, Supreme Court of India, followed by a discussion between Saumya Roy, Debadityo Sinha and Justice Kaul, moderated by Arghya Sengupta.

    ABOUT THE BOOK

Through Mumbai's sprawling Deonar garbage mountains and the waste pickers who work on them, 'Mountain Tales: Love and Loss in the Municipality of Castaway Belongings' looks at India's dizzying development and its remains. The Deonar Dumping Grounds are said to be India's oldest and largest garbage dumping grounds—more than 300 acres large, rising up to 120 feet high.

Mountain Tales chronicles the lives of waste pickers born at the garbage mountains' feet and intertwines their life stories with that of the city and court's attempts to shrink Deonar's garbage mountains. The book traces the mountains' more than 122 year history and the more than 26 year old court case to stop garbage dumping and process waste there. It also chronicles the administrative and legal attempts to shrink Mumbai's rising mountains of waste and their noxious cloud over the city.
