The Indian Law Institute, Kerala State Unit on Thursday presented the P Sukumaran Nayar Memorial Award 2020 to Advocate Ammu Charles.

The Award, instituted in memory of legendary civil lawyer Late Senior Advocate P Sukumaran Nayar by his family members and juniors, is presented for the best legal article or a book written by an advocate, academician or a law student aged below 35 years.

Advocate Ammu Charles was selected for the Award for the book authored by her "E-Commerce Laws : Law and Practice", published by the Eastern Book Company in 2019.

Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court S Manikumar presented the Award. In his address, Chief Justice Manikumar said that writing a book requires immense hard work, dedication and passion for knowledge.

Advocate Ammu Charles, in her reply speech, said that she got the opportunity to write the book after she submitted an article to the SCC journal. She recollected that she got inspired to write the article after reading an interview of Senior Advocate Arvind P Datar, where he had said that he had resorted to legal writing in his younger years to supplement his professional income and that his writing indirectly helped him to build his practice. She added that awards like these provide encouragement to junior members of the bar to dedicate themselves to the profession.

Advocate General of Kerala Mr. K Gopalakrishna Kurup delivered a special address where he stressed the importance of junior lawyers receiving training and guidance under an accomplished senior. He made a special mention about the extra-efforts which women in the profession have to undertake to break the metaphorical "glass-ceiling".
