The principal bench of National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued notice to Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Varanasi and District Panchayat Raj Officer, Chandauli for filing the response for taking steps in pursuance to the recommendations made by the Committee for preventing pollution in the Ganga river in Varanasi.
“Let Notice be issued to the Commissioner, Varanasi and District Panchayat Raj Officer, Chandauli for filing the response for taking steps in pursuance to the recommendations of the Committee noted above,” said the bench of Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Justice Sudhir Agarwal and Dr. A. Senthil Vel.
These observation came in response to the letter petition, alleging that there is discharge of domestic waste water and untreated industrial waste water into river Ganga at Varanas.
It was stated that the discharge is especially taking place at locations like “Sambeem School Samane Ghat Varanasi, Ravidaash Park Nagava Varanasi, Sakath Mochan Nala, Batuspur Sarai Nandan Varanasi and Tegara Mod Ramnagar, Varanasi.”
In May, 2022 the Tribunal formed a joint Committee with the State Pollution Control Board as nodal agency with a direction to submit the report.
The Committee recommended that, “a separate drain to discharge industrial effluent generated from Ramnagar industrial area should be constructed.”
“The domestic sewage generated from the multimodal terminal should also be treated by installation of adequate STP and the treated effluent shall be reused in the terminal area for gardening/irrigation/dust suppression,” it added further.
The matter is now listed for October 16, for further consideration.
