Ghazipur Slaughterhouse: ‘ Inspection Report Reveals Untreated Effluent From Slaughtering Area Is Discharging In Yamuna’, NGT Seeks Fresh Report

The principal bench of National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to further examine the violations of environmental norms at Delhi’s Ghazipur Slaughterhouse and file a fresh report within eight weeks.
Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Dr. A. Senthil Vel noted that the joint inspection report revealed that, “...untreated effluent was found to be bypassed from slaughtering area and ultimately discharged into river Yamuna.”
The NGT further added that the Water Quality and Microbiology Analysis report disclosed in the joint inspection report indicates presence of total coliform, “fecal coliform and E.coli number in outlet of nano filtration as 1.8 MPN/100 ml whereas in outlet of RO filtration unit, these numbers were found to be 240 MPN/100 ml, 13/100 ml and 9.3/100 ml respectively.”
In the light of the above, the Tribunal said that the joint Committee will carry out the inspection after four weeks and disclose the status of compliance of environmental norms found on the spot.
These observations came in response to the execution application, after considering the recommendations made by the joint Committee and also report thereof, certain deficiencies by Ghazipur slaughterhouse in the compliance of earlier order of NGT was found.
In the report submitted by DPCC in the present proceeding, deficiencies were identified, such as the absence of a “Bio-methanation Plant for treating wastes such as rumen, stomach and intestinal contents, dung, agricultural residues, etc.”
The matter is now listed for January 15, for further consideration.
