Orissa High Court Will Have Its Own Database With Judgments From 1948 Onwards: Justice Subhasis Talapatra

While speaking on the occasion, Justice Subhasis Talapatra, Judge & Chairperson of the IT & AI Committee of the High Court informed that steps are being taken to create a database with a search engine where the judgments rendered by the High Court from the year 1948 onwards will be stored.

Lauding the free Wi-Fi facility, he said that it is a measure for upgrading the standard of the Bar and it is provided to the advocates so that they can utilise their time in the High Court in a meaningful way carrying out research, without having to consume their own internet data.

He highlighted the lawyers will have access to sites of the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), Manupatra, Indian Kanoon, Bar & Bench and Live Law, where they can avail the database free of cost.

While speaking about the launch of e-inspection of records facility, he said most of the lawyers are very reluctant to apply for inspection even though they feel it is important. The application needs to be filed, after which a considerable time is taken to process the application and finally allow the inspection.

While expressing satisfaction over the introduction of the e-inspection facility of case records, he said that Chapter XXIII of the Orissa High Court Rules, which provides for physical inspection of records and registers, will get redundant.

Now, the lawyers will just have to apply for inspection and upon approval of the same, they will get immediate access to the e-copies through a dedicated computer system, he said. He also expressed hope that soon they will be able to view the same from their own devices, which is for the time being not allowed for certain security reasons.
