Assam State Legal Services Authority Organizes Awareness Program, Launches Initiatives
On December 15, 2024, the District Library Auditorium of Darrang, Mongoldoi, Assam witnessed a significant gathering aimed at raising awareness and promoting justice for citizens of all ages.
A range of initiatives were launched during the event, highlighting the continued efforts of the Assam State Legal Services Authority (ASLSA) to empower the people of Assam, especially senior citizens, and enhance access to justice for all.
The event was graced by the presence of several distinguished guests, including: Mr. Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and Patron-in-Chief of ASLSA, Mr. Justice Lanusungkum Jamir, Judge of the Gauhati High Court and Executive Chairman of ASLSA, Mr. Justice Sanjay Kumar Medhi, Judge of the Gauhati High Court and Portfolio Judge of Darrang, District and Sessions Judge, Darrang, Member Secretary, Assam State Legal Services Authority, District Commissioner, Darrang, Superintendent of Police, Darrang, President of the Darrang Bar Association which was attended by around 600 plus persons.
Stalls of various departments were also put in place in order to disseminate information as regard beneficial schemes.
The event also witnessed ceremonial distribution of assistive devices and health card to the senior citizens.
Awareness Programme on the NALSA Schemes for Senior Citizens:
The event began with an informative awareness programme on the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) schemes, focusing on the rights of senior citizens. This session highlighted the legal protections available to the elderly, including their right to social security, healthcare, and dignity. The programme aimed to educate seniors and the broader community on the crucial legal provisions designed to ensure their well-being.
Launch of Eye Donation Project – Naba Drishti In a heartwarming gesture, the event saw the launch of the "Naba Drishti" Eye Donation Project. This initiative, a joint endeavour by the Assam State Legal Services Authority (ASLSA) and the District Legal Services Authority (Darrang), was designed and dedicated to providing hope and a clearer future through the donation of eyes.
The elderly residents of Niribili Old Age Home, Darrang, took a significant step by pledging to donate their eyes, creating a legacy of compassion and hope. They expressed that although they have witnessed many seasons of life, they now wish to offer the gift of sight to others. Their heartfelt decision symbolizes the desire to share the precious gift of vision, making the world brighter for others in need.
The project, "A mission to provide Vision of Hope, from Our Elders to the World," is expected to inspire people across the state to consider eye donation and contribute to improving lives.
Launch of ASLSA's Official YouTube Channel: In a move to further broaden its reach, the Assam State Legal Services Authority launched its official YouTube channel. This new initiative is designed to effectively disseminate information about the legal services available to citizens and promote the mission of ensuring access to justice for all across Assam. Through this channel, ASLSA aims to empower individuals through legal awareness and provide free legal aid, ensuring that justice is accessible to everyone, especially those in remote areas.
Release of the ASLSA Theme Song: Adding a musical touch to the event, the ASLSA released its official theme song. The song embodies the core values of justice, equality, and empowerment, emphasizing the Authority's commitment to providing legal aid to marginalized and vulnerable communities. The song serves as both a reminder of the importance of legal support and a rallying call for collective action toward building a more inclusive and just society.
Launch of the New Edition of the Handbook of ASLSA: In line with its mission to increase awareness and accessibility, ASLSA also launched the updated edition of its Handbook. The new edition is designed to provide comprehensive information about the legal services available to the citizens of Assam, including guidance on how to access legal assistance.
It reflects ASLSA's ongoing commitment to ensuring that every citizen has the knowledge and resources to understand and exercise their legal rights. The updated Handbook serves as a crucial resource for legal professionals, organizations, and the public alike, contributing to the overarching goal of empowering citizens through legal education and support.
