More than two months after the courts across the country have gone digital during COVID-19 lockdown, the Orissa High Court has disposed of more than 5000 cases through video conferencing.
Since March 23, the high court had suspended its normal functioning and holding virtual courts with limited Benches and court staff on rotation basis.
According to a court source and the data provided till June 3, the High Court has held 27 division benches and 136 single benches during lockdown.
"Total 10991 cases were listed and 5335 care have been decided by the benches through video conferencing ," a press release added.
The new Chief Justice of Orissa HC, Justice Mohammad Rafiq, had taken charge during lockdown on April 26.
Currently, the high court is functioning with one division bench on alternate days (Tuesday and Thursday) and 7 single benches every working day.
The lawyers and litigants, who have been facilitated to file cases physically as well as through mails, were allowed to appear from homes and offices.
To prevent congregation of lawyers in the court premises, in the light of nation wide lockdown, Chief Justice of India had asked all courts including the top court to deliver justice through virtual means.
