The Maharashtra Government has ordered a high-level inquiry into the collapse of an illegal billboard in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, which resulted in the death of 16 individuals and injured 75 others. The incident occurred on May 13, 2024, when a massive billboard collapsed onto a petrol pump following strong winds, trapping around 100 people underneath.

The State Home Department has issued a government resolution, ordering a detailed investigation to address the public concerns regarding the legality and safety of billboards, particularly those on government and railway properties. The resolution, issued on June 10, 2024, mandates the formation of an inquiry committee under the chairmanship of retired Chief Justice Dilip Bhosale of the Allahabad High Court.

Before his elevation as an HC judge, justice Bhosale practiced before the Bombay HC. He has been a judge of Bombay HC, Karnataka HC, as well as the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh before becoming the Chief Justice of Allahabad HC.

The government resolution says that the incident raised serious public concerns over the safety and legal status of billboards in the city and specifies that the inquiry committee's structure and procedure would be independently established.
