After Ruckus In Advocates Association Election, Madras High Court Asks Teller Committee To File Report

After the elections to the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) turned violent, the High Court has asked the Teller Committee to file a report by Thursday on the alleged instances of booth capturing and subsequent violence. 

On Tuesday, two lawyers who were Presidential candidates in the election, mentioned the matter before the bench of Justice R Mahadevan and Justice Sathya Narayana Prasad which is the designated bench to hear the association matters.

The court orally directed the Teller Committee to file a report on the alleged instances of booth capturing and the subsequent violence. The court also suggested that any parties who may be interested in joining the matter may do so by filing petitions by such time.

On Monday also, a mentioning had been made before the bench of Acting Chief Justice T Raja and Justice Bharatha Chakravarthy by vice chairman of Bar Council of India Advocates S Prabhakaran. Prabhakaran told the court that the elections were not carried out properly and asked for appointment of a retired judge of the High Court to conduct the elections. The bench had suggested to the parties to file proper petitions.

The MHAA election, which was being held in the High Court campus on Monday following a court order, was called off after instances of booth capturing and subsequent violence

The teller committee chairman and Senior Counsel MK Kabir told the media that the chaos was an attempt by certain elements to stall the elections. He said that the elections stood postponed and the same would be informed to the High Court. It would then be upon the High Court to decide the next date and venue.
