The Madras High Court on Monday came down heavily upon a group of Advocates allegedly involved in certain unlawful activities with respect to a land grabbing case.

A Single Bench of Justice N. Anand Venkatesh observed that when it comes to the conduct of advocates, there will be zero tolerance shown by the Court and it will ensure that the activities of some advocates do not spoil the image of the entire profession.

The remarks were made after the Bench was informed that some Advocates had made an attempt to break open the lock in a disputed property and tried to take forcible possession of the same.

The Court was further apprised that everyday a group of persons, purportedly advocates, come to the subject property and create law and order problem.

"It is reported that some of the advocates also form part of this unlawful assembly Due to the presence of the advocates, it is reported that the respondent police is hesitating to give police protection to the property," the Judge recorded in his order.

The Petitioner had approached the High Court against such miscreants and stated that even the Police is hesitant in registering a complaint against them.

The Judge observed that such practices though were prevalent in the past, the situation was brought under control in light of stringent action taken by the Court by suspending some of the advocates.

"This is the third occasion, in the last one month, where the notice of this Court has been drawn to the advocates indulging themselves in criminal activities by forming part of an unlawful assembly and making attempts to grab properties," the Judge said.

He noted that such despicable practices seem to have revived during the Lockdown period and was of the view that the Court must come down heavily and stop such activities before it goes out of control.

In this backdrop, the Bench has called upon the concerned authorities to scrutinise the available photographs and video footage, identify the miscreant advocates and submit a report indicating their names.

The report will also form the basis for the Court to give a complaint before the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry against the concerned advocates for necessary action.

"When it comes to the conduct of the advocates, there will be zero tolerance shown by this Court and this Court has to ensure that the activities of some of the advocates do not spoil the image of the entire profession," the order stated.

The matter is listed for orders on March 2, 2021.
