VIT School of Law, Chennai, welcomed its new batch of students for the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and B.B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Batches on Friday.
VITSOL which has been ranked as the 6th best amongst the private law colleges in India and the best private Law school in Tamil Nadu as per the recent IIRF rankings of 2024, stands testimony to ensuring gender parity with 65% females in its new batch of students.
"This shows that since 2014, the year of the law school's inception, they have made huge strides in ensuring gender equity within the campus," the Dean of VITSOL, Dr. Rabbiraj C. remarked.
Dr. Rabbiraj attributed the success of the Law School to two core factors, namely, friendly faculties, and world-class curriculum, which is constantly reviewed by the core faculty team.
“One of the strengths of our curriculum is that it caters not only to the needs of the industry, but also enables our students to involve in community services through our legal aid clinic,” Dr. Rabbiraj added.
Mr. Vivek Sriram, Partner at Khaitan and Co., Chennai, and the Guest of Honour for the event laid down the following three principles as the major takeaways from law schools:
1. Make your friends. The person next to you could be the next judge or partner in a law firm or a leading counsel. These friends that you make in Law School last a lifetime.
2. Build your skill-set. It is not about how much law you know, but if you know where to look for and find the law. You should have a fundamental work ethic, as well. No matter what career path you choose - whether you go in-house or pursue a career in litigation, these skillsets are important.
3. Lastly, be nimble. People tend to have preconceived notions on how a legal career is to look like. However, Law Schools provide you with a fantastic platform to figure out what it is that you want to do. Hence, be nimble while choosing your path and don't get pigeonholed.
"Your journey as a lawyer is marked by your learning, growth and ability to influence others" the Chief Guest for the day, Baminee Vishwanat, Global General Counsel for TVS Supply Chain, said while inaugurating the Induction Program.
Vishwanat added onto Sriram's list of the three key takeaways from law schools, by encouraging students to dream big, and to remain ethical and socially responsible at the same time.
Vishwanat also reminded students to embrace continuous and lifelong learning, and to seek practical experience through internships.
Importantly, Vishwanat advised the new students to network early and often and to utilize social media platforms such as LinkedIn effectively for that purpose. She further asked the students to stay adaptable and to seek mentorship, which is important in the field of law.
"Let us build a community where ideas are shared freely with respect and where everyone is empowered," she added.
VIT School of Law, which started in 2014 with 100 students and 10 faculties has now grown to a vibrant law school with 1500 students pan India and 75 faculties of which 45 are core law faculties. VITSOL has also been jointly organizing International conferences with McGeorge School of Law, University of Pacific, and with University of Salzburg, Austria.
