The mail litigant in the Ramjanmbhoomi-Babri Madjid case in Ayodhya and Nirmohi Akhara chief Mahant Bhaskar Das passed away following a heart attack on Saturday. He was 88.

Nirmohi Akhara is one of the three claimants to the disputed site in Ayodhya. It owns many temples in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

Das had suffered heart attack twice before, once in the year 2003 and then in 2007.

Das was born in Gorakhpur's Ranideeh in the year 1929.

He came to Hanuman Garhi in Ayodhya at the young age of 16 and became a disciple of Mahant Baldev Das.

He was appointed a priest at the ‘akhara’, which is dedicated to Lord Rama.

In 1986, Baldev Das passed away and Bhaskar Das was appointed the chief of Hanuman Garhi.

In 1993, he was appointed the head of Nirmohi Akhara.
