Advocate-On-Record Exam To Be Held From June 12 To 15 [Read Notification]

The Supreme Court of India has announced that its next examination for Advocates-on-Record [AoR Examination] will be held on June 12, 13, 14 and 15.

The exam will be held on the Supreme Court premises.

All advocates who will be completing one year's continuous training on or before April 30, 2018, are eligible to appear for this examination.

The last date for the acceptance of the application by Secretary, Board of Examiners, is April 28 and its acceptance is subject to production of requisite certificate of training from an Advocate-on-Record under Regulation 6 of the Regulations regarding Advocates-on- Record Examination.

An AOR exam is must if one wants to practice in the Supreme Court. Only an AOR can file a case in the Supreme Court on behalf of any party.

To be an AOR, one must clear this exam conducted by the Supreme Court which is a set of four papers with passing marks of 50 in each paper and an aggregate of 60.

The exam is a combination of four papers on Drafting, Practice and procedure of Supreme Court, Advocacy and Professional ethics and leading cases.

One of the notices suggested following books for study in paper III i.e. Advocacy and Professional Ethics -- The Advocates Act and cases reported under the Advocates’ Act, particularly disciplinary proceedings, cases relating to the contempt of court involving advocates, The Bar Council of India Rules and the Supreme Court Rules, 2013.

The notice issued by Deepak Jain, Registrar and Secretary, Board of Examiners also gives details of the syllabus and a revised list of 44 leading cases.

The notice also states that the since the results of the last Advocates-on-Record Examination have been declared, candidates who failed to obtain 60 percent aggregate or obtained 60 percent aggregate but less than 50 marks in any paper will have the permission to appear in the subsequent examination in one paper only, if they choose to appear in the fresh examination.

However, a candidate who failed in all papers will not be allowed to sit in the next examination.
