The Supreme Court on Monday heard a petition concerning infrastructure of all trial courts in the country. The matter was heard by a bench comprising of CJI UU Lalit and Justice Ravindra Bhat.

At the outset, the CJI remarked that the issue had been engaging the attention of the Chief justices and Chief Ministers conference and it had been seriously given a thought. Therefore, the issue could not be entertained as an Article 32 petition.

However, the petitioner, Advocate ML Sharma, appearing in person insisted that despite the issue being of such grave importance, till date, nobody had given any instructions regarding what had to be done for the infrastructure of District courts. He further added–

"There we copycat petitions filed, but nobody has the solution. Nobody has said what is to be done, how is it to be done."

To this, Justice Ravindra Bhat stated–

"Mr. Sharma, when Justice Gogoi was the Chief Justice, this matter had been taken up on a very priority basis, on suo-moto basis. Now because of COVID, it has become such that it hasn't been taken up. But don't accuse people of doing copycat and all."

Eventually, CJI UU Lalit decided that the bench would call for papers which were disposed of by the bench presided over by Justice Gogoi when the matter was heard by him. He directed all matters pertaining to the issue to be listed together.
