The Supreme Court on Friday(February 2) heard a plea which seeks the curb the killing of animals and to switch over to lab-generated meat for consumption.
A Bench Justices KM Joseph and JB Pardiwala informed that it will hear the matter after the judgement in the Jallikattu matter is delivered and therefore, deferred it by a month.
"There's a Constitution Bench which is hearing the Jallikattu matter. Some of the issues which are part of your petition - cruelty to the animals to be avoided, your taste buds should yield to right of the animals. Let it come up after the Judgement in that case is delivered. Many of the issues in this might get resolved. Let us see", the bench verbally said.
In December, a 5 judge Constitutional bench headed by Justice KM Joseph and comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy and CT Ravi Kumar concluded hearing the batch of petitions challenging constitutionality of laws permitting Jallikattu, Kambala and bull-cart race in states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
When the matter came up for hearing yesterday, the Bench firstly congratulated the petitioner, Advocate Sachin Gupta who had recently completed his Bachelors in Law, for his drafting and research skills.
Coming to the merits of the matter, the bench opined,
"In a country like India, meat is the affordable means of protein for the poor. That's a reality".
Later, the Bench after engaging in a short discussion amid themselves, decided to defer the matter.
"Also, many of your solutions are far ahead of the time. That's why we complimented you for the work you have done. We will consider it."
The petition is likely to come up next on March 3.
