'Right To Privacy' Petitioner, Former Karnataka High Court Judge Justice KS Puttaswamy Passes Away Aged 98

Justice KS Puttaswamy, former Karnataka High Court judge and the lead petitioner in the famous 'right to privacy case', which led to the Supreme Court recognising the right to privacy as a fundamental right under Article 21, has passed away at the age of 98.

Justice Puttaswamy enrolled as an advocate in 1952 and was appointed as a judge of the Karnataka High Court in 1977.

He served as a judge till his retirement in 1986, followed by a stint as the vice chairperson of the Central Administrative Tribunal in Bengaluru.

In 2012, he became the litigant who challenged the constitutional validity of the Aadhar scheme before the Supreme Court.

Famously, though the Apex court did not strike down the scheme, it made a landmark observation that the right to privacy would fall under the category of the fundamental right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution.
