The Supreme Court will hear today petitions seeking 100% verification of EVM votes with VVPAT slips.

A bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta will hear the petitions filed by the Association for Democratic Reforms and others.

Responding to the petition filed by ADR, the Election Commission of India had cited practical difficulties in verifying all VVPATs. Earlier, a bench led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, while hearing ADR's petition, had expressed reservations about the demand for 100% VVPAT verification, saying that it would add to the ECI's burden without much significant advantage.

Bhushan: democratic system must not only work but seen to work by the voters.

Since voters don’t trust EVM what is the problem in counting the VVPAT slips?

    • 16 April 2024 2:54 PM IST

Bhushan: only way to be sure is to let the voter verify the slip. Being a small slip the counting will be done in well less than a day.

In the election they are taking 6 weeks, one more day makes no difference.

One more day vs confidence in the whole system.

Majority of people don’t trust the EVM

Bhushan: today they are still only counting 5 VVPAT machines. In one constituency there are more than 200.

They are only counting 2%. There is not justification to not count on. Due to the opaque glass, even the VVPAT can be manipulated.

Let the voter take the slip and put it in the ballot box.

Bhushan: counting doesn’t have to be done sequentially can be done parallely.

J Khanna: we have understood that. Any other thing you want to argue?

    • 16 April 2024 2:51 PM IST

Bhushan: today there is only a small slip with one symbol, and Mr Qureshi who was the Election commissioner said that counting of the VVPAT slips wouldn’t take more than a few hours.

    • 16 April 2024 2:51 PM IST

Bhushan: problem is even bigger because of the opaque glass and the voter can’t see the slip being cut.

That’s why all the opposition parties said give the VVPAT slip to the voter and let them put it in the ballot box.

    • 16 April 2024 2:50 PM IST

Bhushan: just because it has not happened doesn’t mean it can’t be.

Even the VVPAT has a problem, but it s voter verified since the voter can verify or cancel their votes if discrepancies are noted. It also has a dispute resolution system.

Bhushan: correctness cannot be establish. May be hacked. One is manipulation and hacking remotely through a Bluetooth device or virtually.

EC says they cannot be hacked virtually. When a server loading person comes

      J Khanna: we have understood

Bhushan: I have given a few propositions. There was a large citizens commission which examined the EVMs with the worlds top computer scientists who recommended that in an EVM votes are recorded electronically and no guarantee can be given to the voter that the vote was correctly cast and recorded in the final tally.
