CJI Ramana To Chair Conference Of High Court Chief Justices Tomorrow

The 39th Conference of Chief Justices of High Courts will be held tomorrow (29th April, 2022) in the Supreme Court premises. Chief Justice of India NV Ramana shall be chairing the conference. The Chief Justices' Conference will also be attended by Mr. Justice Uday U. Lalit and Mr. Justice A.M. Khanwilkar, the two senior most puisne Judges of the Supreme Court and all the Chief Justices/Acting Chief Justices of High Courts. 

The 1st Chief Justices' Conference was held in November, 1953 and till date 38 such conferences have been organised. The last Conference was held in the year 2016.

The Conference of Chief Justices of all High Courts will be followed by the Joint Conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on Saturday, 30th April, 2022, which will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, the press release states.

Both the Chief Justices' Conference and the Joint Conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices are being held after a gap of six years. 

AIM OF THE CONFERENCE

As per the press release, the 'Chief Justice Conference-2022' aims to address and resolve the issues concerning judiciary and shall review the progress made on the Resolutions passed in the previous Chief Justices' Conference-2016 and also shall consider further steps that need to be taken to improve the justice delivery system in the country.

The Conference shall also deliberate on the issues of infrastructure and capacity building, with special focus on development of IT infrastructure in Courts, human resources, institutional and legal reforms, Appointment of High Court Judges etc. Issue governing establishment of National Judicial Infrastructure Authority and State Judicial Infrastructure  Authorities as Special Purpose Vehicles at the Central and State levels for development of Infrastructure in District Courts, shall also discussed upon, among others.

Another notable agenda of the conference is regarding the 'Institutionalisation of pre-litigation mediation and setting up of a robust mechanism for ADR', among others.

Earlier this week, while hearing a PIL seeking improvement of judicial infrastructure, the CJI had remarked that the issue will be disucssed during the CJ-CM conference.
