While highlighting the environmental concerns and huge number of deaths occurring in Delhi, a plea has been filed before the Delhi High Court seeking directions to immediately repair and rectify the non-functional electric crematoriums in Delhi and install more such crematoriums.

The plea has stated that non-functional electric crematoriums at Sarai Kale Khan and Bela Road should immediately be made functional within a period of time stipulated by the Court.

The plea by Sunil Kumar Aledia,, a social worker and activist, has sought directions to authorities to ensure that the charges for cremation of a body in the electric crematorium may be uniform across the city in all the crematoriums.

The plea filed by Advocates Kamlesh Kumar Mishra and Nitin Kumar Nayak has sought directions to the land owning authorities in Delhi to allot land for installation of electric crematoriums in different areas of Delhi.

Further, the petitioner has urged the Court to direct the Delhi Government and the civic agencies operating in the different areas of Delhi to place a list of all the crematoriums and burial grounds in their respective areas, on their respective websites to make the same available with the general public.

The petitioner has urged the Court to direct the registrar General of India (Births and Deaths) to issue direction with regard to Online/e Registration of the Deaths as also of Births in the Country, by exercising power under section 3.3 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act. Further directions to Chief Registrar of Births and deaths to make public the no. of deaths on a monthly basis in the public domain has been sought.

The plea has sought directions for starting of a centralised online facility for the issuance of the death certificate for all citizens and making it accessible to general public for the registration of deaths so that they don't have to travel physically for the said purpose.

Citing the extraordinary situation of Covid in Delhi, the plea has sought directions to make Bhai Parmanad Hospital near Nigam Bodh Ghat functional, which is otherwise lying unused for past several months. Therefore it's been prayed, the facilities and utilities at this hospital be inspected and if found feasible the same may be utilised.
