Centre Notifies Appointment Of Justice D Krishnakumar As Acting Chief Justice Of Madras High Court

The Central Government has appointed Justice D Krishnakumar, senior most judge of the Madras High Court as the next Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court. The appointment comes after the Government cleared the appointment of Justice R Mahadevan, the current Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court, as a judge of the Supreme Court.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice D. Krishnakumar, Judge of the Madras High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court consequent upon elevation of Shri Justice R. Mahadevan, Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court as Judge of the Supreme Court of India," the notification read.
Notably, on July 11, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of Justice KR Shriram of Bombay High Court as the Chief Justice of Madras High Court. However, the Centre has yet to clear this appointment.
Justice D Krishnakumar was appointed as a permanent judge of the Madras High Court on April 7, 2016. Before his elevation, Justice Krishnakumar had served as a Special Government Pleader (Education from 2013. Justice Krishnakumar also served as an Additional Central Government Standing Counsel from 1998-99 and Special Government Pleader from 2001-2006. During his practice, Justice Krishnakumar has been standing counsel for the Teachers' Recruitment Board and several Municipalities, Universities, and other Government Undertakings.
