Lok Adalat serves as a mechanism for facilitating amicable settlements between parties, outside the formal judicial framework. The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring access to justice for all, through a range of initiatives, including the organization of Lok Adalats. NALSA continues to make significant progress in alleviating the burden on the formal judicial system by actively promoting alternative dispute resolution methods.
In pursuit of its mandate NALSA under the guidance of Patron-in-Chief, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Chief Justice of India and Executive Chairman Justice B.R. Gavai, Judge, Supreme Court of India, successfully conducted the 4th National Lok Adalat of 2024 across the Taluks, Districts, and High Courts of 36 States and Union Territories. In Rajasthan, it will be held on 21st December, 2024, at the High Court of Rajasthan, and on 22nd December, 2024, in the District Courts of Rajasthan, following the completion of the election process of the District Bar Associations.
A total of 1,45,47,595 cases (One crore, forty-five lakh, forty-seven thousand, five hundred ninety-five) were successfully settled at the 4th National Lok Adalat. This includes 1,21,78,509 pre-litigation cases (One crore, twenty-one lakh, seventy-eight thousand, five hundred nine) and 23,69,086 pending cases (Twenty-three lakh, sixty-nine thousand, eighty-six). The cases resolved span a wide range of matters, such as criminal compoundable offences, plea bargaining, revenue cases, bank recovery cases, motor accident claims, cheque dishonour cases, labour disputes, matrimonial disputes (excluding divorce cases), land acquisition cases, intellectual property rights (IPR), consumer matters, traffic challans and other civil cases. The total settlement amount for these cases was approximately Rs. 7,462.54 crores (Seven thousand four hundred sixty-two crores and fifty-four lakhs). This remarkable response from citizens reflects the objectives of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, and the National Legal Services Authority (Lok Adalats) Regulations, 2009.
The success highlights the public's trust in Lok Adalats, greatly improving access to justice, particularly for the underprivileged and marginalized communities.
