Delhi court asks Tihar jail to file report on Nirbhaya convict's plea seeking stay on execution
A Delhi court has directed Tihar authorities to file a report on a plea moved by one of the convicts Akshay Thakur seeking a stay on the execution of the death warrant.
Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana, at Patiala House Court, has listed the matter for further hearing on Monday.
Today, Akshay's counsel AP Singh informed the court that a "complete" mercy petition on Akshay's behalf, has submitted for the consideration of the President of India.
He submitted that the earlier mercy petition which was rejected by the President, did not have the "complete facts".
It was further informed to the court that Pawan Gupta's curative petition is also pending before the Supreme Court while a criminal appeal case is also pending before the Delhi High Court.
Moreover, a petition is also pending before the election commission of India challenging the mercy petition of Vinay Sharma.
On February 5, President Ram Nath Kovind had, rejected the mercy petition of convict Akshay Thakur. So far, mercy petitions of Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh have also been rejected.
On February 17, a fresh death warrant was issued for the convicts -- Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh -- for their hanging at 6 am on March 3.
On January 7, the first common death warrant was issued against the four convicts, and the date of execution was set for January 22. However, the said date had to be postponed to February 1, by an order dated January 17, due to the subsequent developments in the legal remedies exercised by the convicts
