Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Transfer Of Four Telangana High Court Judges

Justice G Anupama Chakravarthy (Proposed to be transferred to the Patna High Court)

Justice Munnuri Laxman (Proposed to be transferred to the Rajasthan High Court)

Justice M Sudheer Kumar (Proposed to be transferred to the Calcutta High Court)

Justice C Sumalatha (Proposed to be transferred to the Karnataka High Court)

The Collegium, consisting of Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice B R Gavai and Justice Surya Kant, recommended these names after consulting Judges of the Supreme Court who are conversant with the affairs of the High Court of Telangana

While Justice Chakravarthy requested to transfer her to any High Court near her parent High Court, Justice Laxman requested the Collegium to either postpone or drop the proposal for his transfer and in the alternative, he sought a transfer to the High Court of Karnataka. Justice Sudheer Kumar also sought a transfer to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, the High Court of Karnataka or the Madras High Court.

The Collegium did not find merits in their requests and therefore, it has proposed their transfer as aforesaid.

However, in the case of Justice C Sumalatha, who requested the Collegium to reconsider the proposal for her transfer and in the alternative, to consider transferring her to a High Court of a neighbouring State i.e. Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the Collegium acceded to her request and recommended her transfer to the Karnataka HC (instead of Gujarat HC).

As per Collegium's statement, all the transfers have been recommended for "better administration of justice".
