The President of India has nominated Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, judge of the Supreme Court, as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority.

Justice Kaul is the second senior judge of the Supreme Court. The present Chief Justice of India, Justice DY Chandrachud, was the previous Executive Chairman of NALSA.

As per convention, the post is occupied by the second senior judge of the Supreme Court.

The notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice on November 25 read as follows :

"In exercise of the powers conferred under Clause (b) of sub-section (2) of Section 3 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the President is pleased to nominate Hon'ble Shri Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Judge, Supreme Court of India, as Executive Chairman, National Legal Services Authority, with immediate effect".

According to the Legal Services Authority Act 1987, the Chief Justice of India is the Patron-in-Chief of the NALSA. A serving or retired Judge of the Supreme Court is to be nominated by the President, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, as the Executive Chairman.
