Plea In Supreme Court Challenges Delhi High Court's Decision To Confer Senior Designations On 70 Advocates
A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the recent communication by the Delhi High Court on Senior Advocate designation conferred to 70 lawyers.
Today, when the matter was mentioned by the Counsel before the bench of CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, the bench refused to allow oral mentioning and asked the lawyer to circulate a letter for listing.
The Counsel stressing the urgency of the matter stated, " This is regarding the Delhi HC Senior Advocates Designations, my lords may please allow 30 seconds, there is a reason (for mentioning)"
To which the CJI reverted, "No please, nothing, file a letter will take it up."
Notably, by a notification dated November 29, the Delhi High Court designated the names of 70 lawyers as Senior Advocates.
This was after Delhi High Court's Permanent Committee recommended names of 71 lawyers for being designated as Senior Advocates after interviewing more than 300 lawyers.
The Committee comprises of Chief Justice Manmohan, Justice Vibhu Bakhru, Justice Yashwant Varma, Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, Senior Advocate Sudhir Nandrajog and Senior Advocate Mohit Mathur.
However, the designations have apparently been clouded by controversy after Nandrajog resigned on the claim that the final list was drafted without his consent.
