Former Judge of Supreme Court Justice PB Sawant passed away in his residence at Pune.

He was 91.

He was appointed as a Judge at the Supreme Court in 1989 and he retired in 1995. Prior to that, he had been appointed as a Judge of the Bombay High Court. He was also the former Chairman of the Press Council of India (PCI).

As a Judge of the Bombay High Court, Justice Sawant was known for having conducted an inquiry into the 1982 crash of Air India.

Post his retirement, he was associated with many public causes such as the investigation into the 2002 Gujarat Riots and chairing the Commission constituted in 2003 to investigate corruption charges against 4 ministers of the Maharashtra Government.
