Hearing Of Urgent Matters In Supreme Court Via Video Conferencing - [LIVE-UPDATES]

Attorney General KK Venugopal apprises the Court of various measures taken vis-à-vis releasing and released prisoners across jails in India.

AG said most states have released prisoners in consonance with appropriate directions.

Supreme Court is hearing the suo moto petition pertaining to the issue of overcrowding and infrastructure of prisons across the country in the wake of the #coronavirus pandemic.

Supreme Court is currently testing live "webcast" of Court proceedings.

For now, the plan is to keep the webcast's accessibility restricted which shall be accessible only via "password protected video link", generated from the SC office.

Justice DY Chandrachud, head of SC E-Committee on the technology being used for conducting Hearings:-

"SC is at advanced stage of trial of e-filing software for 24/7 filing of docs. Clerks don't need to come to SC for filing. HC's can use Zoom, Vidyo, or any other software."

Chandrachud J. : "In a sitting house there are two modalities, no confidence motion or floor test.There has been no judgment since the SR Bommai case on why floor test is necessary. In Bommai the governor has exercised power under Article 356."

Chandrachud J : "In the facts of this case the GOVERNOR WAS RIGHT in ordering floor test. We have not accepted Dr. Singhvi's argument that governor cannot pass order. Governor is not taking any decision by himself. Governor is calling a floor test.."
