Former Supreme Court Judge and former Acting Governor of Karnataka, Justice Shanmughasundaram Mohan passed away today.

Justice Mohan enrolled as an Advocate in the Madras High Court in August, 1954. He pursued his Law degree from University of Madras and was awarded Lakshminarasa Reddy Gold Medal. Between 1956 and 1966, he served as part-time Lecturer in the Law College, Madras. He was appointed as an Assistant Govt. Pleader in 1966 and as a special government pleader in 1967. He Acted as an Advocate General of Madras in 1971.

He was appointed as an Additional Judge of Madras High Court in February, 1974 and was made permanent in the same high court on August 1, 1975. In 1988, he was appointed as an Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court and was subsequently appointed as the Chief Justice of that high court on October 19, 1989. Later, he was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court on October 26, 1989.

He was appointed as an Acting Governor of the state of Karnataka between 5.2.1990 and 8.5.1990. in October, 1991, he was elevated to the bench of the Supreme Court from where he retired on February 10, 1995.

Justice Mohan was also known for his writings and his publications include Justice Triumphs, Genesis, His Many Splendored Gem, etc.
