The Punjab Government has today approved the name of Senior Advocate Gurminder Singh as the new Advocate General Of Punjab. Singh will replace Senior Advocate Vinod Ghai who resigned yesterday from the position citing "personal reasons."
The Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann after the cabinet meeting today announced that Singh's name has been approved. Singh holds expertise in constitutional law, service matters, criminal law, arbitration etc. He was designated as senior advocate in 2014.
The newly appointed Advocate General has been practising in High Courts of Punjab & Haryana, Himachal, Delhi since 1989. He has also been standing counsel for Medical Council of India, Dental Council of India, Union Service Public Commission, Punjab Vidhan Sabha and other Boards and Corporations of the State. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has appointed him as the Amicus Curaie in various Public Interest Litigations. He has earlier served as assistant advocate general and deputy advocate general.
Senior Advocate Singh, is also representing Civil Judges and Judicial Magistrates in Haryana who sought appointment to the district judiciary and have challenged the State's decision rejecting High Court's recommendations for promotion of 13 judicial officers.
