A Workshop on International Commercial Arbitration was organised by the Centre for ADR, Institute of Law, Nirma University from 15th to 17th September. The inaugural ceremony was presided by Prof. William Fox, Former Dean and Professor of Law, Columbus Law School, Washington DC. Prof. Fox discussed the fundamentals of arbitration as to what arbitration is and its origination. He also discussed how arbitration has evolved over the period of time and provided statistics to showcase the growth of arbitration across the globe.
The first and second sessions were presided by Mr. Ajay Thomas. Subsequent sessions were presided by Ms. JyotsanaYagnik, Principal Judge and Mr. Alok Vajpeyi, Associate, Singhania and Partners, Mumbai.
The second day witnessed sessions presided by Mr. Tejas Karia, Partner, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, New Delhi, who discussed third party funding and interim measures that the tribunals and courts take in order to provide reliefs to the parties. The second day also comprised video lectures by Prof. Carbboneau (US) and Mr. Madhav Kumar (Hong Kong) who shed light on arbitrability issues and investment treaty arbitrations.
The final day of the workshop saw a panel discussion on the issue of bribery and corruption in arbitration by Prof. William Fox and Mr. Dharmesh Khandelwal, student ILNU. Subsequently, another panel discussion was conducted on pro arbitration approach of US courts and Indian courts. The panelists were Mr. Ylli Dautaj and Mr. Alok Vajpeyi and the discussion was moderated by Prof. William Fox.
