The Centre has notified the appointment of Dr. Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, the senior-most puisne Judge of Orissa High Court as its Acting Chief Justice with effect from October 4, 2023. The move comes as the incumbent Chief Justice Subhasis Talapatra is set to retire on October 3, 2023.

Justice Sarangi has done his LL.B. and LL.M. from Madhusudan Law College, Cuttack and Ph.D. in Law from the Sambalpur University.

He was enrolled in the rolls of the Bar in December, 1985 and joined the Chamber of Odia legal doyen Late Gangadhar Rath, Former Advocate General of Odisha. He had regular practice before the Orissa High Court and Supreme Court.

During his advocacy career, which spanned across almost three decades, he conducted cases specially in civil, criminal, constitutional, revenue, tax, labour, service, mining, education, electricity, insurance, banking and elections matters.

For his outstanding performance and high standard of professional ethics as a lawyer, he was conferred with the "Haricharan Mukherjee Memorial Award" for the year 2002 by the then Chief Justice P.K. Balsubramanyam.

He was elevated and sworn in as a Judge of the High Court on June 20, 2013.
