The Supreme court collegium has recommended making five additional judges of Madras High Court permanent.

The judges are
(i) Justice L Victoria Gowri,
(ii) Justice PB Balaji,
(iii) Justice KK Ramakrishnan,
(iv) Justice R. Kalaimathi, and
(v) Justice K Govindarajan Thilakavadi
The Madras High Court collegium had unanimously resolved to make the judges permanent on 29th April 2024. The Chief Minister and the Governor concurred with this recommendation following which a judge of the Supreme Court was consulted and the decision was taken.
The collegium resolution further said that a Committee of two Supreme Court judges had assessed the judgments of the five judges and assessed their merit.
It opined that the above additional judges are "fit and suitable for being appointed as permanent Judges."
The appointment of Justice Victoria Gowri in 2023 had attracted controversy after certain videos containing her alleged hate speeches surfaced. A writ petition was filed in the Supreme Court challenging her appointment on the ground of her alleged involvement in hate speeches. The petition, which was heard on the day of her scheduled appointment, was dismissed by the Court saying that the suitability of a candidate approved by the collegium cannot be judicially reviewed.
