The Jharkhand High Court has reported a significant increase in its case disposal rates during the first quadrimester of 2024. The data reveals that the court achieved an average clearance rate of 138.41%, which has resulted in a notable reduction in case pendency.

As of January 1, 2024, the total number of pending cases stood at 85,593, comprising 38,445 civil cases and 47,148 criminal cases. By April 30, 2024, this number had decreased to 80,365, with civil cases reducing to 35,435 and criminal cases to 44,930. This marks an overall reduction in pending cases by 6.11%.

During this period, the High Court saw the institution of 3,931 new civil cases and 9,961 new criminal cases, totaling 13,892 new cases. Despite this influx, the court successfully disposed of 6,942 civil cases and 12,286 criminal cases, summing up to 19,228 cases cleared. The clearance rate for civil matters was impressively high at 176.59%, while criminal matters had a clearance rate of 123.34%.

The detailed analysis of key case types further highlights the court's efficiency. For instance, writ petition civil cases saw a reduction from 24,058 pending cases at the beginning of the year to 21,930 by the end of April, representing an 8.85% decrease. Similarly, criminal miscellaneous petitions decreased from 9,461 to 8,583, a 9.28% reduction, and anticipatory bail applications saw a significant reduction of 30.02%, dropping from 3,204 to 2,242.

Notably, civil cases had a total institution of 3,931 and a total disposal of 6,942 between January and April 2024. Whereas, the criminal cases had a total institution of 9,961 and a total disposal of 12,286 in the same period. The clearance rates in percentage terms were 176.59% for civil cases, 123.34% for criminal cases, and an average of 138.41%.
