Justice Gaurang Kanth was sworn in as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court today. Chief Justice TS Sivagnaman administered the oath of office.

The Central Government had notified his transfer from the Delhi High Court pursuant to the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation. On July 12, the Collegium rejected his request for transfer to Madhya Pradesh High Court or Rajasthan High Court or any other neighbouring State.

During the swearing in ceremony, welcome addresses were delivered by AG SN Mookherjee and DSG-I Billwadal Bhattacharya, who pointed out that Justice Kanth’s induction would make him the youngest judge of the Calcutta High Court. Further addresses were delivered by office bearers of the Incorporated Law Society, the Bar Association and the Bar Library Club.

Justice Gaurang Kanth in his address reflected on the legacy of the Calcutta High Court and vowed to uphold its majesty. He also expressed gratitude towards his family, as well as his colleagues on the Bench, and the members of the Court.

Justice Kanth reflected on his roots in the East, the legacy of the Calcutta High Court, and reiterated his commitment to ensure that justice reaches the homes of all who seek it. He said:

Thank you [to my colleagues, members of the Court, and my family members]. I am indebted to the Chief Justice for administering oath of office, and to become a judge of the most prestigious chartered High Court of the country, with such a profound legacy. I am humbled and honoured…I was born in the East, but later went to study in Delhi, and settled down in the North before being elevated as a judge of the Delhi High Court. I guess destiny has come a full circle and I am back in the East, to serve the people of the East. I am struck by the monument of this High Court, which serves as a beacon of fairness, justice, and the rule of law. This Court has nurtured some of the brightest legal minds in the country. With such a rich history and legacy, I feel greater responsibility to carry forward this tradition by ensuring the effective and efficient dispensation of justice. The strength of the judiciary lies not in the power of an individual judge, but in the collective wisdom of its members. I value the role played by advocates as officers of the court, and encourage and open a constructive dialogue that fosters a spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect. Today as I assume office, I take the responsibility to ensure that the fruits of justice reach the homes of all those who seek it, and reaffirm their faith in the judicial machinery of our nation. I pledge to fulfil my duties as a judge of the Hon’ble Calcutta High Court to the best of my abilities.
Welcome addresses were delivered by Advocate General S.N. Mookherjee, and Deputy Solicitor General Billwadal Bhattacharya, who pointed out Justice Kanth’s distinction as the youngest serving-judge at the Calcutta High Court, as well as his amicable relations with the Bar, at his previous High Court.

Justice Kanth was appointed as a judge of the Delhi High Court on May 18, 2022. It may be noted that unhappy with the Collegium's proposal to transfer him, the Delhi High Court Bar Association Protesting had resolved to abstain from work on July 17 as a token of protest.
